4 MANTRAS FOR BETTER ORGANIZATION IN THE NEW YEAR

Office parties are underway, and we're only a few days away from Christmas and New Year's Eve. It's the perfect time to look back on the past year and refresh our resolutions for the year ahead.

I love the spiritual teaching that says: ask and you shall receive! Specialists/coaches advise us to:

  • Note our objectives;
  • Make a list of our aspirations ;
  • Create a vision board.

Yes, apparently we're more likely to attract what we want if we put it on paper!

I am neither a Buddhist master nor a life coach, but as aprofessional organizerHere are a few mantras to help you implement your New Year's resolutions to organize and declutter.

MAKE YOUR STUFF STAND OUT

Indeed, memory is a faculty that forgets, and we tend to forget the existence of things when we don't see them.

You've probably forgotten some old, expired medication in your medicine cabinet, or discovered moldy food in the fridge (don't worry, it's happened to me too!).

To avoid waste, we need to place our items in a visible position, so that it's easier for us to think about them. Put larger objects or foodstuffs at the back and smaller ones at the front to make them stand out. Otherwise, you risk forgetting that little Michael was present on the day of the class photo!

Add occasional shelvesand stepped shelves or Lazy Susan can make objects easier to access and more visible.

PRACTICE THE BOOMERANG EFFECT

Put things back in their place once you've finished using them, to avoid hours of tidying up.

Just like with a boomerang, imagine that each item has to be returned to its usual place as soon as possible. If you wait until later to put it back, you run the risk of accumulating.

If you find it difficult to remember where you put things, label your storage spaces. That way, every member of the family can benefit from this efficient filing system and find their way around more easily.

Different models oflabellers are available on the market. It may be worth investing in this great tool!

SHOW YOUR COLORS

Many professional organizers are fans of rainbow filing, and I'm one of them! This technique was popularized in the Netflix show " Get Organized with The Home Edit ".

I tested this sorting method with my 5-year-old stepdaughter's library and the wardrobes of some of my customers. The end result was MA-GI-QUE! It's hard to say which of us was the most excited...

Not only is it an intuitive grading method for children and adults alike, it's also so satisfying to the eye.

WORK WITH HEIGHTS

To improve your organization and optimize your space, learn how to use overhead storage techniques. Visit hooks, wall shelvesvertical organizers, perforated panels, etc. are inexpensive and effective ways of saving space and freeing up floor and surface areas.

Also, our favorite or most frequently used items should be located in what I call in my jargon: the "VIP space". This space is located at a height between the shoulders and the hips to improve ergonomics and facilitate access to frequently-used items.

Keep the top of the cupboards for seldom-used or surplus items. This will save you from having to take out the step ladder every time you want to use your favorite pan!

In the hope that these mantras will help you get organized for the New Year, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

May the New Year bring you joy, quality time with your loved ones, abundance, health, success and love. May you be organized in your thoughts as well as in your external environment to free your spaces and your mind!
