Organization of the children's playroom

From the very first weeks of summer vacation, organizing the playroom becomes a real priority. Children are home more often, they take out (and leave lying around!) more toys than usual... and the house can quickly become a battlefield. We want them to have fun! But between crafts, blocks, dress-up costumes and dolls, keeping a minimum of order is essential to maintaining harmony.

What if we took advantage of this moment to rethink this space a little? A well-organized playroom can make summer days so much more enjoyable - for the kids, but especially for the parents!

Why organize the children's playroom?

An organized playroom isn't just a question of aesthetics. It's a powerful tool for promoting a simpler, healthier daily routine.

  • Promoting autonomy
When every toy has its place, children are able to find their way around on their own. This makes them more independent... and saves you from having to intervene at every turn.
  • Reducing parental stress
A space in constant disorder is exhausting to manage. Putting a little order in is a way of freeing yourself from a daily mental burden.
  • Encouraging creative play
Too much clutter and children end up not knowing what to choose. By organizing their playroom, you allow them to rediscover toys they've forgotten.
  • Creating good habits from an early age
When tidying up is part of the routine, children integrate it naturally. It's a great way to pass on the values of respect and responsibility.

Declutter before you organize

Before taking out the storage bins, we start by sorting.

  • Involving children
Even toddlers can get involved. It's easy to explain: we keep what we really love, we give away what we no longer need to benefit other children in need, and we recycle what's broken.
  • Clear boxes for joint decisions
A "Keep" box, a "Donate" box and a "Recycle" box. Sorting becomes more concrete... and faster.

I've written another blog, entirely about decluttering and how to sort effectively.

Define clear play areas

You can't control everything... but you can structure the space.

  • Themed corners to help you find your way around
A reading corner with a small rug and a low bookcase. A craft corner with a table and pots of crayons. A construction corner with bins for each type of block.
  • Simple tips for delimiting
A small piece of furniture or a carpet in a different color can help create bright "zones" in the playroom.

Choosing the right storage furniture

You don't have to buy everything, but a few well-chosen items can make all the difference.

  • Transparent or well-labelled bins
You can see everything at a glance - and so can the kids. If you prefer the contents of the bins not to be visible, opaque bins in different colors, clearly labeled to define toy categories, can also do the trick.
  • Furniture to match
So that they can tidy up without your help, it's essential that their toys are within easy reach. Once again, we encourage independence!
  • Modular, flexible systems
IKEA classics or equivalents do the trick. They can be adapted to suit different ages and needs.

My recommendations for playroom storage furniture:

Tidying up with the kids: a simple routine

Des enfants jouent librement dans une pièce lumineuse et bien aménagée, illustrant les bienfaits d’une bonne organisation de la salle de jeux pour favoriser l’autonomie et le plaisir au quotidien.

Tidying up doesn't have to be a chore. It can become a daily ritual.

  • A precise moment every day
Just before dinner or bedtime, 10 minutes together to get things back on track.
  • Fun tips
A timer, a theme song, or a little challenge ("can we put this away before the song ends?").
  • The key: consistency
The more regular it is, the less difficult it is. And you avoid the big 3-hour clean-up at the end of the week...

Adapting the playroom to the summer season

In summer, children spend more time outdoors... and their games follow the rhythm of the season. To avoid having everything jumbled together in the playroom, it's best to adapt our organization.

Create a drop-off point near the front door

An unobtrusive bin or baskets, placed near the door, can hold everyday summer essentials: sun cream, caps, sunglasses, swimwear, towels... Keep everything within easy reach for spontaneous departures to the pool or park.

Outdoor space for outdoor toys

Toys such as balls, water guns, sand or chalk don't need to live in the playroom. A bin in the garden shed, the garage or even under the terrace can do the trick. The idea is to group them by type to simplify access and storage, and avoid unnecessary trips inside.

Rotate toys according to season

To free up space, you can put away winter games (cocooning puzzles, plush toys and holiday books) and take out those that invite summer adventures. Same thing at the end of summer: a little seasonal sorting keeps the playroom alive, evolving... and well-organized.

An organized home, a smoother family life

The organization of the playroom, like that of the whole house, can transform your daily routine. It's not just a question of aesthetics, it's a way of freeing up mental space, encouraging children's autonomy, teaching them good tidying habits and creating a more harmonious environment for the whole family.

At StéZen, we're here to help you every step of the way, whether it's de-cluttering, rearranging a room or setting up storage systems adapted to your reality. A well-organized home is a great place to live.

What if it were your summer project this year?
