Your cell phone needs a digital spring cleaning.
Decluttering doesn't stop with wardrobes, kitchens, and storage rooms. In this blog post, I wanted to talk to you about a place we often forget... but which sometimes overflows just as much as our home: our cell phone.
And I include myself in that.
Because yes, me too, there are times when my phone becomes a real "catch-all" drawer. Too many photos. Too many apps. Too many notifications. Too many unread emails.
Because every time I take the time to tidy up a bit... I immediately feel lighter. As if it tidied up my mind a bit too.
And I know I'm not the only one.
Why does digital clutter increase mental load so much?
We often talk about mental load at home: things lying around, accumulated papers, cluttered spaces... but digital clutter can have the exact same effect on our brains.
Without us realizing it, our phone is constantly demanding our attention:
- notifications
- reminders
- subscriptions
- photos
- applications we no longer use
- unread emails
It's as if our brain keeps an unseen list of "things to manage."
And sometimes, just seeing "13,482 unread emails" can become stressful. Even subconsciously.
I often notice this with my clients: sometimes, just knowing that a closet is overflowing can become a source of stress, even when the doors are closed and you can't see what's inside. You know it's there. You know it needs to be dealt with.
And it's a bit the same with our digital life. Our phone follows us everywhere. So when it's cluttered, we kind of drag that mental noise around with us all day.
Start digital decluttering without wanting to do it all at once
Petit rappel amical : vous n’avez pas besoin de transformer votre téléphone en système ultra minimaliste digne d’un influenceur Pinterest 😅
The goal isn't perfection.
As with organizing your home, the most important thing is to go slowly and realistically.
I really advise you to start small.
You don't need to book a whole weekend for that. Honestly, just 15 or 20 minutes can already make a difference.
For example:
- delete your unnecessary screenshots
- sort through your blurry photos
- remove some applications
- Unsubscribe from 3 newsletters
- clear out their "Downloads" folder
It's often the small gestures that bring the greatest sense of lightness.
Besides, if you feel that all this seems a bit overwhelming or you don't know where to start, I had already shared another blog post with simple tips to move forward step by step in your digital decluttering. Sometimes, just having a clear little method can really help make it less daunting.

Emails, notifications, and subscriptions: the constant noise
Je vais être honnête avec vous… les infolettres auxquelles on s’abonne “juste pour le rabais de 10 %”, ça finit par s’accumuler vite 😅
And then, we receive:
- 14 promotions per day
- non-stop notifications
- emails you never open
- forgotten app reminders
All of this takes up mental space.
A little tidying up can really help:
- unsubscribe from unwanted emails
- disable certain notifications
- delete accounts you no longer use
- File some important emails
I know few people who have a perfectly empty inbox. And that's not the goal.
But reducing digital noise a bit can really bring a sense of calm.
Forgotten subscriptions that we still pay for without knowing
I think we've all downloaded an app "just to try it out."
A photo editing app.
A training platform.
A meditation app we were convinced we'd use every morning.
A free trial that we forgot to cancel.
Then, a few months later... surprise: it automatically renews again.
If you're on iPhone, you can already see some of your subscriptions here:
- Settings
- Your Apple ID
- Subscriptions
And if you're on Android, you can usually find them in the Google Play Store, under the "Payments & subscriptions" section.
But an important detail: these sections do not always show all your subscriptions. Several services like Amazon Prime, DoorDash, certain streaming platforms, or other apps go directly through your credit card and not through Apple or Google.
So, a good habit can be to:
- View recurring payments in your banking app
- Check your credit card statements
- Search your emails for words like "abonnement", "subscription", or "renewal".
There are also apps designed specifically to help track subscriptions, such as Rocket MoneySome of these apps can connect to your bank account or credit card to automatically analyze your recurring transactions and detect subscriptions for you.

Photos, screenshots, and videos: the chaos we all know
I think we all have a somewhat chaotic photo gallery.
Screenshots we'll never look at again.
Blurry photos taken too quickly.
24 identical versions of the same sunset.
A photo of our grocery list from 2023.
Personally, I mostly try:
- to remove duplicates
- to remove unnecessary screenshots
- to keep important memories
- To create some simple albums
You don't need to have a perfect organization.
The simple act of opening your gallery and no longer feeling like you're searching through a digital attic already feels good.
Decluttering isn't just for your home
Ultimately, it all comes down to the mission behind StéZen.
When I help someone declutter their space, it's never just about bins, baskets, or Pinterest organization.
The real goal is to create more space in everyday life.
More calm.
Less overhead.
And sometimes, it also goes through our phone.
Because we live so much through our screens today that they are completely part of our environment.
