Autumn is just around the corner...Ready, set, go!
Yes, summer is over and autumn is already showing its colors in some regions of Quebec. Are you ready to replace your Bermuda shorts with your woollens?
Even if many people are reluctant (I like the double entendre here) to have to tidy up Unless you're a "snowbird" and leave for Florida as soon as the first autumn leaves fall, but we're not all that lucky ;-P
So I suggest 5 steps to help you prepare for season change :
1. SORT
Before you store your things, make sure you're not using your storage space unnecessarily for things you no longer need.
Take the time to review clothing and items that are damaged, no longer useful or out of fashion. You can divide them into four (4) main categories:
- For sale (the item must be in good or excellent condition).
- To give (the item is used, but in good enough condition to be of use to someone in need).
- For recycling (item is somewhat damaged, cannot be sold or given away, but could be used for other purposes).
- Disposable (the item is too damaged to be sold, given away or recycled).
Did you know that...? A local company based in the Laurentians called Lili Bine designs and manufactures eco-responsible clothing and accessories for children, all handmade from recycled fabrics!
So, before you throw anything away, consider the option of encouraging a Quebec company and make a a positive gesture for the environment at the same time!
2. WASH BEFORE STORING
It can be tempting to skip steps and put away your summer clothes without washing them first.
However, it is preferable not to wait for the return of spring before doing so, as the residues of antiperspirant, dry-cleaning product or soap could contribute to the tissue damage and generate foul odors.
So take the time to do a few little wash loads and make sure that your clothes are well dry before storing.
3. USE THE RIGHT CONTAINER
You've probably heard the phrase: the containing is as important as the content. It couldn't be truer than in this case.
Indeed, it is essential to avoid to store your personal belongings in cardboard boxesand vacuum bags or plastic bagsespecially if it's for a long period, as they take thehumidity and contribute to the formation of mold.
For preserve your property (especially the fabric of your clothes), it is better to choose hermetic plastic bins or rubber ! They offer a protection against humidity and stack easily for optimal storage.
4. KEEP MOTHS AWAY
For keep moths awaythose little bugs that leave holes in your sweaters, opt for a natural solution rather than the mothballs used by our grandmothers.
These mothballs are chemical and harmful for your health. It is preferable to use cedarthe lavenderfrom clovetheeucalyptus or the rosemary-thyme to keep the little beasts at bay.
You can make your own cotton pouches and fill them with these herbs, or soak some of the cotton balls withessential oil to one of these fragrances. In addition to protect your clothesA pleasant fragrance will be released when you take them out of their tray.
5. SAVE SPACE
If storage space in your home is limited, consider the following options:
- Under the bed: Some bed bases are high and airy enough to accommodate plastic storage bins on wheels. It's practical, easy to access and camouflaged!
- In the basement: if you choose to store your things in the basement, this is an excellent option. Just be sure to store them in airtight plastic boxes so they stay moisture-free, as the basement is often a wetter place than the rest of the house.
- In the garage: As for the cellar, beware of humidity! Otherwise, the garage is great for storing a variety of items, including those used seasonally.
- In a mini-warehouse: Many storage companies offer the possibility of renting a mini-storage unit on a monthly or annual basis. This saves space at home and ensures that your stuff stays dry!
- At a relative's house: if none of the above is possible, it may be worthwhile to store your belongings with a family member or friend who owns a large house. Of course, you'll need to convince them that you won't be taking up all the available space on your own, and that you intend to come back for your belongings!
