5 COMMON PITFALLS TO AVOID WHEN ORGANIZING YOUR SPACES

Have you ever been full of good intentions to declutter or reorganize your spaces, only to find yourself not knowing where to start and finally abandoning the project? If so, don't worry, you're not alone! In this blog post, I'll explain why this happens and outline 5 common organizational pitfalls to avoid.

First of all, you need to know that my decluttering and organizing clients often share common ground: they want to improve their situation, but they lack the time, energy and sometimes even the organization to get organized (it's a bit of a paradox, isn't it?). What's more, they generally have bad habits, but find it difficult to change them.

So, here are 5 common pitfalls to avoid in your decluttering and organizing process to achieve your goals.

1. PROCRASTINATION 😬

Procrastination, that little inner voice that tells us to put off until later what we can do now, is one of the worst enemies of organization. It may seem well-intentioned, but it doesn't push us into action. We have to spot it and thwart it by getting into the habit of doing things as we go along. That's the secret to establishing new disciplines in life.

2. ORGANIZE BEFORE YOU DECLUTTER 🧹

It may sound logical, but many people throw themselves straight into organizing without sorting first. When reorganizing a space, it's essential to take everything out, sort it into categories, and decide what you're keeping, recycling, donating, selling or throwing away. Once the inventory is complete, it will be much easier to reorganize your spaces according to the items you've decided to keep.

3. BUY BEFORE MEASURING 📏

Before you go on a shopping spree to make your home as perfect as the ones on TV, measure your spaces! There's nothing more frustrating than coming home with furniture and storage items that are too big or too small. Take your measurements (length, width, height) to avoid costly returns.

4. SURFACE ORGANIZATION 🧹

Superficial organization is like sweeping clutter under the carpet and hoping it will go away on its own. We clean, we move, we do everything to give the impression that everything is in order, but the mess always comes back, like a monster from a horror movie.

To get out of this trap, dive deeper into yourself and understand the emotional, psychological and/or physical causes of clutter. This will help you understand yourself better and create a truly organized and functional space.

5. LACK OF FOLLOW-UP 🔄

Once order has been restored, the key is to keep it ZEN. The clearer and better adapted your organizational systems are to your needs, the more efficient and easier to maintain they will be. Be flexible, adapt your methods if necessary, and don't forget to schedule regular decluttering sessions to prevent the return of clutter. Discipline and regularity are essential to keeping your spaces tidy.

And there you have it! By avoiding these pitfalls, you'll be on your way to an organized, harmonious space. 😊 For more information, please visit theInstitute For Challenging DisorganizationThe new website offers resources and online courses for taming clutter.
