We manage emotions, decisions to be made, unforeseen events, and everything that comes with significant change. Whether it's a move, a breakup, grief, a career change, or a new life stage, it's normal to feel a bit overwhelmed.

Yet, it is often in these moments that organization can become a valuable ally.

Not because it will fix what's happening to us. Unfortunately, no storage box has that power. But because it can help us regain something we desperately need when everything is changing around us: a sense of control.

And sometimes, that's exactly what you need to start moving forward again.

Moving: a new beginning disguised as a mountain of boxes

Among all the transitions that can be experienced, moving is probably the one I encounter most often in my work.

And honestly, I think we often underestimate everything a move entails.

Yes, there are the boxes. The addresses to change. The to-do lists that seem never-ending.

But there's also everything else.

Memories found at the back of a closet. Items that haven't been touched in years. Places you're about to leave. Habits you're leaving behind.

Moving isn't just about relocating your belongings from one place to another. It's often about turning a page and starting a new chapter.

And even when that change is positive, it can be exhausting.

That's why I like to see this step as an opportunity rather than a chore. An opportunity to start fresh and create an environment that is more like us.

Moreover, once the boxes arrive at their destination, another important step begins: making the new space your own. I talk more about this in my article on New beginnings after a movewhere I share several tips for settling into your new home more peacefully.

Declutter to lighten your load

When it's time to prepare for a move, the temptation is great to put everything in boxes as quickly as possible.

But if I can give you one piece of advice, it would be this: take the opportunity to do some decluttering. Not with the goal of having a perfect house. Not to become a minimalist overnight. Simply to avoid bringing items to your next home that you haven't used in a long time.

It's very common to find objects you had completely forgotten about. If you've lived without them for months, sometimes even years, there's a good chance you won't miss them in your fresh start.

If decluttering feels intimidating or you don't know where to start, I invite you to read my article on Decluttering 101I share several simple tips to help you make decisions more easily and start the process without feeling overwhelmed.

Every item that leaves the house represents a little less to pack, move, store, and manage afterward.

And that's already a great way to lighten your load.

Other transitions also deserve gentleness

Even though moving is an excellent example, several other situations can make us experience this same need to reorient ourselves.

After a breakup, some people feel the need to redecorate their space to match their new reality.

After a loss, it's common to not be ready to touch certain objects right away. And that's perfectly okay. There's no deadline to meet.

The important thing is not to go fast. The important thing is to respect your own pace.

Organization doesn't have to be a large project. It can simply be a tool that gently accompanies us as we adjust to this new phase of life.

A chance to start fresh

Even though no one wishes to go through certain ordeals, I sincerely believe that transition periods sometimes offer us a unique opportunity to take stock.

To reflect on what makes us feel good. On what we want to keep. On what we are ready to leave behind. On how we want to inhabit our space and our daily lives going forward.

What if, instead of seeing this transition as something to survive, you also saw it as an opportunity to create an environment that better suits you?

A lighter space. More functional. More soothing. A space that supports the next version of your life.

When organization becomes a nudge

If you are currently going through a time of transition, I would like to leave you with this thought.

Even if some situations are difficult to live through, they can also become an opportunity to start fresh.

A move, a breakup, grief, or any other significant life change often leads us to re-evaluate our habits, priorities, and environment. This provides the perfect opportunity to create a space that better meets your needs today, rather than those of yesterday.

I often see how beneficial a session of sorting, decluttering, or reorganizing can be. It's not just the house that transforms. We find space to breathe, we feel lighter, and we gently regain confidence in what's to come.

And above all, remember that you don't have to do it all alone.

If this transition is already draining your energy or if the magnitude of the task seems daunting, hiring a professional organizer can provide you with supportive guidance, at your own pace. Sometimes, having someone by your side to sort through items, make decisions, and bring order to your space can make all the difference.

Because ultimately, the goal isn't to have a perfect house: it's to create an environment that helps you move more serenely towards the next stage of your life.

Contact me at

L’organisation est probablement la dernière chose à laquelle on pense lorsqu’on traverse une grande transition.
